Heilbronn (dpa / lsw) - In Baden-Württemberg, the police are looking for people with an open arrest warrant in more than 12,400 cases.

About three out of four cases are based on warrants for enforcement, report the "Heilbronner Voice" and the "Mannheimer Morgen" (Saturday).

This gives it "for example, if a perpetrator does not start his detention, his probation is revoked or a fine was not paid or not paid on time", the newspapers quote a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

After the gang rape in Freiburg more than two years ago, a discussion about open arrest warrants broke out.

The background was that the alleged main culprit in the rape of a then 18-year-old girl after going to the disco had previously been searched for by an arrest warrant for other crimes.

It emerged at the end of 2018 that there were more than 20,000 outstanding arrest warrants nationwide.

Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) announced improvements in arrest warrant management.

Among other things, the open arrest warrants have since been recorded centrally at the State Criminal Police Office and in the police headquarters.

"We did our homework and at the end of 2018 created a tight arrest warrant management system," Strobl told the newspapers.

"We have a nationwide uniform, very structured approach to open arrest warrants."
