Halle (dpa / sa) - The municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt have so far spent more money than they received, but are in better shape than a year ago despite the Corona crisis.

In the first nine months of this year, the deficit in the municipal coffers was 125 million euros, as the State Statistical Office announced on Friday in Halle.

The minus was around 38.5 million euros less than in the same period of the previous year.

According to the statisticians, the main reason for this development is the liquidity aid from the federal and state governments to cushion the negative consequences of the corona.

For example, Saxony-Anhalt had already transferred a large installment from the financial equalization in the summer, which would not have been due until December.

At the end of the year, the federal and state governments then gave almost 200 million euros to offset business taxes that were no longer applicable.

Cities and municipalities thus not only received their regular income earlier, but actually received additional aid.

According to the State Statistical Office, the municipalities received around 520 million euros in trade taxes between January and September.

That was almost 18 percent less than in the same period last year.

The important property tax for building and residential properties generated revenues of 189 million euros, which corresponds to an increase of 1.2 percent.

According to the announcement, the municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt take more than half of their income from allocations and levies, and every fifth euro comes in through taxes and duties.

In terms of expenditure, staff account for the largest share at 23.5 percent.
