Berlin (dpa / bb) - Four years after the terrorist attack on Breitscheidplatz, Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) described the attack as a "deep cut".

"Everyone who witnessed this unimaginable act that became reality in the immediate vicinity, at the Christmas market and in the whole city, has this event burned into their memory," said Müller on Friday.

«And we have to realize that it could have happened to any one of us.

The terrorist threat is directed against us all. "

Various precautions have been taken and awareness has been raised, Müller continued.

"But we have to remain aware that the danger still exists."

The past weeks and months have shown that, said Müller with a view to deeds in France.

"The attackers who want to destroy our free way of life and our culture of tolerance and who proceed with inhumane ruthlessness are still there."

A rejected asylum seeker from Tunisia who was traveling in Germany with falsified identities shot and killed a truck driver in Berlin on December 19, 2016.

He killed eleven people in the truck at the Christmas market and more than 70 were injured.

He fled to Italy, where he was shot dead during a police check on December 23, 2016.

On the anniversary on Saturday, Prime Minister Müller will take part in a prayer service in the Memorial Church, which is streamed by the congregation.

A wreath-laying ceremony is then planned.

At the time of the crime at 8:02 p.m., the bells ring twelve times - in memory of the victims.
