Bonn / Mainz (dpa / lrs) - In Rhineland-Palatinate, more telephone and internet connections were monitored in 2019 than in the previous year.

The number of monitored connections has increased by 12.7 percent, the Federal Office of Justice announced on Friday in Bonn.

In 2019, 398 telephone and internet connections were monitored - as part of a total of 177 investigations.

In 2018 there were still 120 procedures in which measures to monitor telecommunications were ordered.

By far the most frequent (318 cases) telecommunications were monitored in proceedings for violations of the Narcotics Act.

Gang theft was the reason for surveillance in 11 cases, 72 for fraud and computer fraud. Murder and manslaughter were the focus in 3 cases, robbery and extortion in 5 cases.

Nationwide, courts ordered the monitoring of landline, mobile phone and internet connections in 5252 proceedings in 2019, according to a notification.

This is an increase of 2.9 percent, it said.

However, the number of surveillance orders that were issued in the proceedings fell by 6.4 percent to 18,225 orders.

As in previous years, it was primarily criminal offenses under the Narcotics Act that gave rise to the surveillance measures.
