The men were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of the 70-year-old in Markaryd by Växjö District Court.

The verdict was appealed to the Göta Court of Appeal, which acquitted the men completely - and decided to set them free on November 4.

By then, the men had been in custody for ten and fourteen months, respectively.

The question was then raised as to whether the long process would lead to a claim for damages - whether it became an acquittal.

- The men have been deprived of their liberty for many months and a acquittal gives them the opportunity to claim compensation, legal expert Sven-Erik Alhem told SVT at the time.

Disappeared without a trace

Three weeks later, the Court of Appeal's acquittal came - but the men had already left Sweden by then.

The man who has been in custody for the longest time, 14 months, has still not been reached.

- My client disappeared as soon as he was released and I have not been able to reach him since.

I have asked the Ukrainian embassy for help, but so far I have not received an answer as to where he is, says Torgny Dahlberg, defense lawyer.

The man has thus not been allowed to take part in the Court of Appeal's acquittal - and it is unclear whether he received information about the possibility of compensation.

For such a process to start, it is required that the men themselves give the go-ahead, says defense lawyer Torgny Dahlberg.

- I can do nothing but wait and remind the embassy to look for my client, he says.

The man who was detained for ten months also disappeared without a trace after the decision of the Court of Appeal.

However, his defense attorney is more vocal about what is happening now.

Have you been able to reach your client and tell them about the verdict?

- I do not want to give any comments, says Tommy Nilsson, defense attorney.
