Berlin (dpa) - The federal government has again classified the Canary Islands, which are very popular with German holidaymakers, as a corona risk area.

The Robert Koch Institute announced on Friday on its website that from Sunday all of Spain will be on the risk list again - which also entails a travel warning from the Foreign Office.

The Canary Islands are one of the very few holiday destinations in other European countries for which no travel warning has been applied so far.

On October 24th, it was canceled due to falling infection numbers.

For eight weeks, the Canaries were considered to be “risk-free”.

For some time now, however, the numbers there have been increasing again - especially on Tenerife.

There, the new infections per 100,000 inhabitants were last at 127 within a week. This increased this value for all seven Canary Islands together - which are otherwise below the limit value of 50, except for La Gomera - to an average of a good 70. From a value of 50, the classification takes place as a risk area and thus also the travel warning.

On Gran Cañaría, in view of the looming German travel warning, demands have been made to decouple Tenerife and La Gomera from the other islands.

The regional government refused.

The travel warning does not mean a travel ban, but is intended to have the greatest possible deterrent effect on tourists.

The good thing for vacationers: You can cancel trips that have already been booked if their destination is declared a risk area.

However, returnees from the risk areas must be in quarantine for up to ten days, but can be exempted from this prematurely with a negative test from the fifth day after entry.

For the Canaries off the west coast of Africa, the travel warning means another heavy blow for the tourism industry.

Alongside the Germans, the British make up the largest group of holidaymakers in normal times.

Great Britain had already ordered quarantine for returnees from the Canary Islands a good week ago.

The companies active in tourism then urgently demanded further emergency aid from the government.

On the European mainland there are only regions in France, Greece, Estonia, Finland, Norway and Austria (two municipalities on the German border) that are not classified as risk areas.

There are also individual regions in Ireland, the Portuguese Madeira, a large part of the Greek islands, the British Isle of Man and the Channel Island of Guernsey as well as the Danish islands of Greenland and Faroe Islands.
