Berlin / Wiesbaden (dpa / bb) - In Berlin, as well as nationwide, significantly fewer insolvency proceedings were opened by autumn.

The number for the period from January to September fell by 26 percent to 2,659 compared to the same period last year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday in Wiesbaden.

The economic hardship of many companies is not yet reflected in the figures.

"One reason for this is that the obligation to file for insolvency for insolvent companies was suspended from March 1 to September 30, 2020," it said.

The federal government had thus reacted to the economic slump in the corona crisis.

According to the Charlottenburg District Court, the figures in October were also below the previous year's figure.

For companies overindebted as a result of the pandemic, the obligation to file for insolvency remains suspended at least until the end of January - mainly because the disbursement of state corona aid has been delayed.

Usually, an application for bankruptcy must be filed no later than three weeks after a reason for bankruptcy such as over-indebtedness or insolvency occurs.

For companies that are over-indebted but not insolvent due to the corona pandemic, this obligation was suspended in the spring - initially until September, then until the end of December.

Now this exemption applies at least to January 2021.
