Koblenz (dpa / lrs) - The winter services in Rhineland-Palatinate see themselves prepared for the upcoming winter weather.

"The salt halls are full and the vehicles are ready," said a spokeswoman for the State Office for Mobility (LBM) Rhineland-Palatinate, based in Koblenz, of the German press agency.

How much has to be spread this winter cannot be judged at this point in time.

"We are not weather frogs," said the spokeswoman.

Last winter was very mild, so that only about 64,000 tons of salt were scattered.

That is not even half of the ten-year mean.

According to the LBM, an average of around 154,000 tons of de-icing salt have been used over the last ten winters.

The LBM defines winter as the period between the first scatter, usually in October or November, and the end of April.

According to its own information, the LBM uses wet salt, a mixture of road salt and a salt solution as well as liquid spreading on the roads in Rhineland-Palatinate.

A saline solution is preventively sprayed on motorways and busy federal roads to prevent the formation of slippery surfaces.

The salt solution is not included in the amount of salt used.

According to the LBM, 1,600 employees in 57 road and 13 motorway maintenance depots ensure that 877 kilometers of federal autobahns and around 17,000 kilometers of federal, state and district roads in Rhineland-Palatinate remain passable even when there is ice and snow.

570 winter service vehicles are available for this, around 350 of which are LBM's own vehicles.

Around 220 vehicles are rented especially for winter service.

The state office is usually not responsible for roads within villages and towns.
