As the news site Samhällsnytt was the first to tell, Christer Yrjas (C) has lived with a man who has been convicted of sexual abuse of children and several cases of child pornography crimes.
The politician tells Samhällsnytt that the man no longer lives with him.
Christer Yrjas is chairman of the municipal council in Tomelilla, and sits on the municipality's family committee.
The chairman of the municipal board, Leif Sandberg (C), confirms in an email to SVT Nyheter Skåne that the party colleague is leaving his political assignments, but does not want to leave any comments.
Christer Yrjas (C) writes in a message to Ystads Allehanda that "The crimes are heinous" and "I now choose to take a step back so that the Center Party in Tomelilla can continue forward".
Tomelilla's municipal director Britt-Marie Börjesson writes in a statement that the convicted man is a childhood friend of Christer Yrjas (C).
She also writes that Yrjas did not tell either the municipality or his party that the man lived with him.
Got jailed
Some of the crimes for which the man was convicted are a couple of years back in time.
The latest is from last year, when he was sentenced to six months in prison for a serious child pornography offense.
During this period he lived with Christer Yrjas.
According to the district court, a very large part of the pictures and films that form the basis for the judgment show "children who are particularly young, who are exposed to violence and other coercion and who are exploited in other particularly ruthless ways".
According to the verdict, it is about real abuse of small children.
Tightened punishment
The man has previously been convicted of sexual abuse of children, and three cases of child pornography offenses, one of which is to be considered serious.
He abused an infant.
