China News Service, December 17 According to Al Jazeera’s Chinese website on the 16th, the US government recently announced sanctions against Turkey on the grounds that Turkey purchased the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.

In this regard, some experts analyzed that the Russian-made air defense system was merely an excuse for the United States to impose sanctions on Turkey.

Turkish political analyst, security and strategy expert Yusuf Alabada analyzed that the US sanctions on Turkey have nothing to do with the defense system purchased by Turkey.

The United States is trying to contain Turkey by controlling the purchase of weapons, and is trying to strengthen its control over Turkey in many parts of the Middle East. Therefore, the system is only an excuse for imposing sanctions on Turkey.

Turkey signed a contract with Russia in 2017 to purchase the S-400 air defense missile system.

The United States and other NATO countries have repeatedly warned Turkey not to purchase this Russian-made system.

Russia began to deliver the S-400 system to Turkey in July 2019.

Turkish President Erdogan confirmed in October 2020 that the Turkish side has tested the S-400 system and said that the test will continue and that the Turkish side will not seek permission from the US for this.

On December 14, 2020, the U.S. government announced sanctions against Turkey on the grounds that Turkey purchased the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.

Regarding US sanctions, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning it, stating that US actions will have a negative impact on Turkey-US relations, and Turkey will adopt reciprocal sanctions.
