Berlin (dpa / bb) - buses and trains of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) have been used significantly less since the lockdown began on Wednesday.

The number of passengers has fallen noticeably, said BVG spokeswoman Petra Nelken on Friday.

Before that, demand was 75 percent of the pre-crisis level, when the BVG was still transporting around 3.5 million passengers a day.

"The buses and subways are now 50 percent, and the trams 60 percent," said Nelken.

It is noticeable that many companies are relying even more on working from home during the tough lockdown.

During the holidays, there should be no restrictions on the BVG offer due to the corona crisis. Around 3,500 BVG employees are on duty on Christmas Eve, and almost as many on the two Christmas holidays, said Nelken. Despite the tightened Corona measures, the BVG is sticking to the regular holiday schedule set for the Christmas season: After that, all buses and trains will run according to the Saturday schedules on Christmas Eve. The Sunday timetables apply on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
