Kiel (dpa) - In view of the renewed lockdown, the North Trade Association has lowered its sales forecast for the Christmas business by seven percent.

For Schleswig-Holstein the association now expects sales of 3.6 billion euros, for Hamburg 2.59 billion and for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 1.58 billion euros.

For the entire year 2020, a minus of 0.1 percent is expected, announced the trade association North on Thursday in Kiel.

While online retail and the grocery sector are doing good business, it is tough for many other industries that they now have to lock up in the middle of the Christmas business, the busiest time of the year.

The current losses of many companies would be 50 percent and more.

The managing director of the North Trade Association, Dierk Böckenholt, called for sufficient financial support for the companies affected by the closure.

The shops should be treated like the catering establishments.
