Oberstdorf (dpa) - Ski flying world champion Karl Geiger is infected with the corona virus and has to worry about his start in the 69th Four Hills Tournament.

The 27-year-old Oberstdorfer had tested positive in one of the regular tests and is now in quarantine, as the German Ski Association (DSV) announced on Thursday.

“I'm fine, I have no symptoms.

I am now in quarantine and will take regular tests, ”said Geiger, who won gold in the individual and silver in the team at the Ski Flying World Championships in Planica, Slovenia last weekend.

The world title was the greatest single success of his career so far.

Whether Geiger's start on the tour (from December 28th) is in jeopardy was initially open.

The World Cup in Engelberg, Switzerland, which is traditionally the dress rehearsal for the ski jumping event at the turn of the year, will definitely miss the World Cup runner-up last winter.

“Unfortunately we have to do without our newly crowned ski flying world champion Karl Geiger in Engelberg,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher.

Geiger was the best German athlete in the winter so far, along with team mate Markus Eisenbichler.

All other tests in the team were negative, wrote the DSV.

The team will travel to Switzerland this Thursday, and the last competitions before Christmas will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

For Geiger it was one of the most turbulent weeks of his life.

In Slovenia he had surprisingly triumphed while his heavily pregnant wife was at home in the Allgäu.

Daughter Luisa was born on Monday.

"That was probably this perfect week, which is always talked about!" Geiger wrote on Instagram and thanked his wife and daughter, "for waiting for me."

While rivals like Austria have already been badly hit by the virus, it is the first corona case for the German ski jumping team this winter.

Those responsible had always emphasized that the concept should be structured in such a way that other athletes do not have to be quarantined if they are positive.

The Four Hills Tournament begins on December 28th with the qualification in Geiger's hometown of Oberstdorf.

Geiger was third overall on the tour last winter and is one of the hottest candidates for overall victory in this year's 69th edition.

There has not been a German tour winner since Sven Hannawald 2001/2002.
