On the eve of "Super Tuesday", Pete Buttigieg had joined a Joe Biden in great difficulty in the primary.

Ten months later, the rising young Democrat (38) is rewarded with an appointment as Minister of Transport.

Joe Biden on Wednesday touted the formation of a government of "firsts" with the nomination as the one who will, if confirmed, be the first openly gay member of a US presidential cabinet - Richard Grenell, who has served as its director Acting Intelligence Officer, was not a minister and did not need to be confirmed by the Senate.

A springboard

Joe Biden, who will succeed Donald Trump on January 20, recalled that Bill Clinton had appointed the first woman to head American diplomacy (Madeleine Albright), Barack Obama had appointed the first African-American to head the ministry of Justice (Eric Holder).

“But compared to all the previous ones, the Biden / Harris team is apart thanks to all the firsts they represent,” he insisted.

“Our team isn't just a first, or two, but eight,” Biden said from his home base in Wilmington, Delaware.

"And today, the ninth, the first openly homosexual appointed to head a ministry," he added, adding that Pete Buttigieg, 38, would also be one of the youngest ministers in history.

“The Biden / Harris government will be like America,” he added.

Kamala Harris will become the first woman to become vice president on January 20.

Retired General Lloyd Austin, if confirmed by the Senate, will become the first African-American to lead the Pentagon.

For Buttigieg (pronounced [Boudè-djedj]), while a vast plan to renovate infrastructure could bring together Democrats and Republicans, the Ministry of Transport could act as a springboard for 2024. For a possible duel against Kamala Harris.
