Berlin (dpa) - The chairman of the World Medical Association warns against the worsening of the situation in German hospitals in view of the high corona numbers.

"As the intensive care units become increasingly overcrowded, triage decisions will unfortunately have to be made by the doctors alone because politics has let us down here," said Frank Ulrich Montgomery of the "Rheinische Post".

Triage means that medical professionals must decide who to help first due to scarce resources.

A doctor from Zittau in Saxony had previously caused a stir with comments about a triage of corona patients.

In an online forum, the medical director of the Oberlausitzer Bergland Clinic, Mathias Mengel, reportedly spoke on Tuesday evening that there had already been multiple triages in Zittau.

The clinic did not explicitly confirm or deny the doctor's descriptions on Wednesday.

Instead, she emphasizes: the situation is critical.

According to Montgomery, the high number of corona deaths is not just a political failure: "We were actually excellently positioned.

But the population itself has not planned and followed the rules, and that's why the health system is now overloaded. "
