Neubrandenburg (dpa / mv) - The violent death of six-year-old Leonie from Torgelow in Western Pomerania will again concern the Neubrandenburg district court from mid-January 2021.

As a court spokeswoman said on Thursday, the appeal proceedings against the stepfather will begin on January 19, 2021, who at the beginning of 2020 was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder through omission, bodily harm resulting in death and mistreatment of wards.

The motives of the then 27-year-old man are to be examined more closely.

This was ordered by the Federal Court of Justice (BGH).

Specifically, it should be checked whether the stepfather made a "killing resolution" on January 12, 2019 during the mistreatment or later.

That was "decisive for the legal classification of a subsequent murder under cover," the BGH had declared.

According to the regional court, the BGH had confirmed the so-called external crime.

Leonie was found dead on January 12, 2019 in the family's apartment in Torgelow.

The stepfather said the girl fell down a staircase in the hallway and later died of the injuries.

The court did not follow the instructions given by the mother.

Leonie and her younger brother had been mistreated several times.

Most recently, the six-year-old was the victim of a punishment by the man, the judge said.

For the appeal proceedings, three days of hearing are planned until February 15, so far without witnesses.
