The Swedish King Carl XVI.

Gustaf is of the opinion that Sweden was not successful in the fight against the corona pandemic.

"I think we failed," said the king in an interview that Swedish television SVT published excerpts on Thursday.

"We have a large number who have died and that is terrible." The Swedish people have suffered enormously under difficult conditions.

In Sweden, more than 7,800 people have now died of Covid-19.

Around 75 percent of them were older than 70 years.

The country had less stringent corona measures than others until recently.

Carl Gustaf said that he felt especially sorry for the families who had not been able to say goodbye to their deceased relatives.

“I think it's a difficult and traumatic experience not being able to say goodbye,” said the 74-year-old.

When asked whether he was afraid of being infected with Covid-19 himself, he said: "Lately it feels more concrete, it has crept closer and closer." In November, his son, Prince Carl Philip, and whose wife Sofia tested positive for Covid-19.
