Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - From concert hall to bearer of hope against the corona virus: Frankfurt's Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) and health department Stefan Majer (Greens) presented the municipal vaccination center in the Frankfurt Festhalle on Thursday.

The city wants to vaccinate up to 4,000 people a day in 44 cabins, if enough vaccine is available.

A total of 250 employees are to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

The vaccination center should start work around the "turn of the year", said Feldmann.

When exactly it starts depends on when the vaccine from the Mainz-based company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer will be approved in the EU and when the state of Hesse will then deliver it to Frankfurt.

This vaccine is already vaccinated in the USA and Great Britain.

Vaccines from other manufacturers are not yet ready for approval in the EU.

The Frankfurt center has been operational since December 15th.

The operator is the Red Cross Frankfurt, which is supported by the trade fair and the health department.

Mayor Feldmann urged caution: The vaccination center was a "silver lining", but one had to be careful not to turn this hope into recklessness.

Majer emphasized that "a vaccine is only available with the protective measures".

The aim is to vaccinate 60 percent of the population.

Until this day, the principle of solidarity continues to apply without restriction: "I protect the other and I protect myself."

The Frankfurt vaccination center is divided into different sections with several waiting areas.

Before the vaccination there is an informative consultation with a doctor, followed by the opportunity to recover.

Overall, the stay should not be longer than 30 minutes.

First, it is the turn of the over 80s.

These could be contacted via the registration office or the family doctor.

An accompanying person may come to the vaccination appointment.
