Bonn (dpa / lnw) - Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised the composer Ludwig van Beethoven as a motivator and as the most played composer in the world.

Beethoven was pure emotion, he said in a video message at the gala concert for the composer's 250th day of baptism on Thursday evening in Bonn.

"That is why you understand his music all over the world, from Tokyo to Vancouver, from São Paolo to Singapore," said Steinmeier, according to a manuscript that was previously distributed.

Beethoven give courage for the great adventure of being human together in this world.

"We are still grateful to him for that," said the Federal President.

The composer was baptized on December 17, 1770 in Bonn; he died in Vienna in 1827.

For the Beethoven anniversary, a concert with the conductor Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra was planned for the evening at the Bonn Opera.

Since numerous concerts had to be canceled in recent months due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Beethoven year was extended well into 2021.
