Hamburg (dpa) - Because of the corona pandemic, significantly more German citizens are sending Christmas parcels this year.

While in 2019 only about every fourth German citizen (26 percent) gave up at least one program with a view to Advent or Christmas Eve, this year the figure is 33 percent.

This was the result of a survey by the YouGov Institute on behalf of the parcel service Hermes, which was published on Thursday.

Of those surveyed who send a parcel, just under a third (31 percent) stated that they did so as compensation for Christmas activities.

The survey of around 2,100 people took place in mid-November, when government measures against the pandemic were not as strict as they are now.

Since Christmas visits and travel should now be avoided, the percentage could have risen.

The parcel industry is booming in Corona times, the service providers are working at full speed.

Hermes manager Marco Schlueter said: "The situation has now worsened again due to the newly imposed lockdown and we are assuming that the already very high parcel volumes will increase again in the final spurt up to Christmas business."

The companies appeal to consumers to order their programs as early as possible.

Hermes states December 21 (12 noon) as the latest time so that the consignment posted in the parcel shop can be delivered by Christmas Eve.
