Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - The scientist Enrico Schleiff has been appointed the new President of Frankfurt's Goethe University.

The previous president, Birgitta Wolff, symbolically handed over her office to the biology professor on Thursday.

Schleiff was elected the new university president in July.

He will take over the office on January 1, 2021 for the next six years.

"I am very much looking forward to the task of further developing our Goethe University as President together with my colleagues," said Schleiff on Thursday.

He sees his election as a mandate to strengthen the cohesion of the university.

Enrico Schleiff studied physics in Prague, Mainz and Basel and did his doctorate at McGill University in Montreal (Canada).

In Munich he completed his habilitation in cell biology and botany.

Since 2007 he has been a professor at the Institute for Molecular Biology at the Goethe University.

From 2012 to 2018 he was vice president of the university.
