Lindau (dpa / lsw) - Customs officers caught a 25-year-old at Lindau apparently trying to smuggle an expensive sports car from Switzerland to Eastern Europe.

According to the main customs office in Ulm, the car should be brought to Hungary for repair on Thursday and was loaded on a trailer.

However, the man did not have the necessary customs papers during the inspection on Autobahn 96 on Tuesday.

The officials initiated criminal proceedings against the driver on suspicion of tax evasion and levied around 25,000 euros in import duties and 7,360 euros in security for the expected penalty.

The vehicle was secured until the taxes were paid.

As the customs also announced, this was the third case of sports car smuggling from Switzerland that customs officials uncovered within a few weeks.

Before that, a Porsche and a Ferrari should also go to Eastern Europe for repairs.

The import of goods from a non-EU country must be declared to customs.

This also applies to vehicles if they are not used by the registration holder himself.
