Leverkusen (dpa) - After his departure from Bayer in the spring of 2024, the incumbent corporate boss Werner Baumann wants to devote himself to new tasks.

He wanted to “largely withdraw from the business community” and “do something completely different,” said the 58-year-old to “Manager Magazin”.

He then does not want to seek supervisory board mandates or consulting activities.

In September, his contract was only extended by three and not four years - according to a company announcement, this was done at his request.

This corresponds to his personal life planning, he explained at the time.

Born in Krefeld, he has been with Bayer since 1988.

In 2010 he joined the board of directors and took over as chairman in 2016.

His term of office ends on May 1, 2024, and he cannot extend it.

During his time, the Leverkusen-based company took over the controversial takeover of US competitor Monsanto, which cost the equivalent of 57 billion euros.

Many US citizens filed lawsuits because of suspected cancer risks in Monsanto weed killers, but Bayer considers the controversial glyphosate to be safe when used properly.

In the summer, the company concluded a settlement in the USA that concerned 125,000 lawsuits and cost around 10 billion euros.

However, the issue is not off the table yet, because one of the branches of the regulation is still open.

Baumann made headlines in 2019 when the shareholders refused to discharge him at the annual general meeting.

No acting CEO of a Dax group has ever had to accept such a slap in the face.
