A healthcare professional living in Alaska had a severe allergic reaction after receiving an injection of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19, to the point of being hospitalized on Tuesday.

She received an antihistamine and epinephrine (adrenaline).

Wednesday evening, she "was better," Bartlett Hospital told

, but she had to stay a second night under observation.

This health worker, whose identity has not been specified, had no known allergic history.

Ten minutes after being vaccinated, she turned red and took an antihistamine.

She was then admitted to the emergency room with shortness of breath and a rash on her face and chest.

She was treated again for an anaphylactic reaction with an antihistamine and epinephrine.

When her symptoms returned, she was also given steroids.

Pfizer investigation

British health authorities on December 9 advised against administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to people who have had "significant allergic reactions" in the past, after two cases of poor response to first injections.

"We will take a close look at all the information suggesting serious allergic reactions and we will update the package leaflet if necessary" (of the vaccine), said a spokesperson for Pfizer.

US health authorities have also advised against this vaccine for people likely to develop an allergic reaction to any of the components in its formula.

The US Medicines Agency (FDA) "is aware of information about an anaphylactic reaction in a person who has received the Covid-19 vaccine.

The agency will continue to work with the CDC (Centers for Disease Prevention) and Pfizer to better understand what happened, ”the agency tweeted Wednesday evening.

The United States gave the green light to Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine on Friday evening, paving the way for a massive nationwide vaccination campaign that began on Monday.

The United States plans to vaccinate three million people this week and hopes to vaccinate up to 20 million if the United States Drug Agency (FDA) also gives urgent approval for Moderna's vaccine by the weekend.
