Europe
today has become the first region in the world to record more than half a million deaths from Covid-19, according to a tally by AFP based on reports provided by health authorities.
In the
52 countries and territories of the
European
region
there are at least 500,069 deaths (with over 23 million infections).
There
are 477,404
victims in
Latin America and the Caribbean
, 321,287 in the
United States
and
Canada
,
208,149
in
Asia
,
85,895
in the
Middle East
and 57,423 in
Africa
.
According to the Johns Hopkins University tally, the US has exceeded 307 thousand victims and 17 million cases of Covid-19.
Six out of ten deaths in the European region affect five countries: Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and Spain;
among the countries most affected, however, the worst ratio between victims and population belongs to Belgium (158 per hundred thousand inhabitants).
Only yesterday the World Health Organization had warned of a "high risk" of the resumption of the epidemic in Europe at the beginning of 2021, asking to wear a mask and keep the social distance even during the Christmas holidays.
