Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony's Interior Minister Roland Wöller (CDU) wants to introduce a constitutional check for prospective police officers in the fight against extremism.

This is currently coordinated with the state government, said the CDU politician on Wednesday in the state parliament in Dresden.

This check is to become part of the selection process for the police and possibly other groups of officials, announced Wöller.

At the same time, he spoke out in favor of a broad-based study of racism in society.

"Saxony will actively participate in the independent federal police study," said Wöller.

The Left had suggested a racism study for the Saxon police in the state parliament, but the application was rejected.

With a view to the federal police study, the Minister of the Interior stated: “The results of the study provide important insights with regard to motivation for choosing a career, everyday working life and the issue of violence against police officers.

We will evaluate these findings after the study has been completed and implement them in a suitable form. "

In December, Horst Seehofer (CSU) commissioned the German Police University to conduct a broader study on everyday police work.

The interior ministers of the federal states had indicated their support for this.

Seehofer had previously opposed a study that only focuses on racism in the police authorities.
