Berlin (dpa) - exhibition halls, sports centers, hotels: regional centers have been set up throughout Germany for an early start of corona vaccinations, through which vaccinations are initially to be bundled.

Up to 440 locations should be able to be used for this, as a survey by the German press agency of the state governments showed.

Tens of thousands of doctors and other helpers have registered for missions, but the recruitment process is still partially ongoing.

The capacities are to be designed in such a way that several thousand vaccinations per day would be possible in each country.

In Bavaria alone, 99 vaccination centers are to go into operation and can carry out up to 30,000 vaccinations a day, as the Ministry of Health explained.

Hessen is also aiming for up to 30,000 daily vaccinations with 28 vaccination centers.

In Berlin, up to 20,000 vaccinations per day should be possible, which will run through six centers.

In Hamburg, up to 7,000 vaccinations should be feasible every day - in an exhibition hall in which seven centers can be switched on and off as required.

Rhineland-Palatinate plans up to 7200 daily vaccinations through 31 centers.

The federal and state governments had agreed to be largely operational with the vaccination centers by mid-December.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) said on Tuesday evening in the ARD that this had also been achieved, vaccination centers and vaccination structures are now ready.

However, this does not yet apply everywhere.

In Berlin it should be so far by December 21, in Brandenburg with eleven planned centers by the beginning of January, as the authorities said.

In Baden-Württemberg, nine central vaccination centers should be ready for use in mid-December, and around 50 additional “district vaccination centers” from January 15, 2021 29 centers planned - depending on the amount of vaccines available.

Spahn is relying on approval of the first vaccine shortly before Christmas.

According to him, the first vaccinations could then begin within two to four days - but on a smaller scale, as only limited amounts of vaccine are available for the time being.

The vaccination centers should therefore not run at full load at first.

For assignments in vaccination centers that are to be in operation for a few months, extra staff is required.

Thousands of volunteers are available nationwide for this purpose, but hiring has not yet been completed in many places.

In the state of Westphalia-Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia alone, 8,000 medically trained people registered, more than half of them doctors.

6,000 doctors reported in Bavaria and 5,000 doctors in Baden-Württemberg.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, 3,000 doctors agreed to take over services.

In general, we are also looking for interpreters, cleaning and security staff.

Some countries did not provide any information on staff planning upon request.

Mobile vaccination teams that go to nursing homes and hospitals, for example, are to be docked at vaccination centers.

In Berlin, 30 such teams are planned - in Thuringia, in addition to 29 vaccination centers, ten mobile teams, which could be increased to 15.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there will be twelve centers as well as up to 40 mobile vaccination teams as required.

In Saarland, there are two mobile teams for three vaccination centers.

In the city-state of Bremen with Bremerhaven, two centers should be able to give up to 2000 vaccinations per day, mobile teams at least 500 per day.

Various buildings have been converted into vaccination centers - in Baden-Württemberg, for example, a hardware store, a tennis hall and the Liederhalle cultural center in Stuttgart.

In Schleswig-Holstein, vaccination centers are being moved to a former indoor playground, the foyer of the Lübeck music and congress hall and an empty building in Flensburg that was supposed to be used by the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

In Lower Saxony a youth hostel becomes a vaccination center, in Düsseldorf the soccer arena.

In Saxony-Anhalt, a former supermarket is being converted.

In Hesse, there is a former airport site, in Rhineland-Palatinate there is also an Opel factory in Kaiserslautern.

The state takes the start of vaccinations directly into its own hands via the vaccination centers.

The background is that some vaccines are cooled to minus 70 degrees, which is not possible in every practice and pharmacy.

In the centers, vaccines can be used in large quantities before they expire.

Special safety precautions are possible.

In addition, priority should be given to certain groups when vaccinating more clearly than in medical practices, as Spahn explained.

After the start in central facilities, vaccinations should continue across the practices on a broad front.

When it can be switched is open.
