Berlin (dpa / bb) - Trucks that transport the corona vaccine should also be allowed to drive in Berlin on Sundays and public holidays.

"The Senate Department for Transport and the Environment will shortly issue an exemption for the Sunday and public holiday ban, so that the transport of vaccines in the state of Berlin is also possible with heavy trucks at all times," said a spokesman for the traffic administration on Wednesday upon request.

The general rule in Germany is that trucks over 7.5 tons are not allowed to drive on Sundays and public holidays from midnight to 10 p.m.

However, there are exceptions, for example for the transport of fresh food.

On Tuesday, Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia announced that the exemption for vaccine transports was already valid there.

Also on Tuesday the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced in Amsterdam that it would present its opinion on the approval of the vaccine from Pfizer and Biontech on December 21.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) described it as a very good signal that, as things stand today, there will be approval in the EU before Christmas Eve.

After that, you can start vaccinations within two to four days.

Six vaccination centers are planned in Berlin, which, according to the Senate Department for Health, should be ready to go on December 21.
