London (AP) - The German darts professional Max Hopp has mastered his opening hurdle at the World Cup in London and, as expected, reached the second round.

On Wednesday evening, the 24-year-old Hesse defeated the Australian outsider Gordon Mathers 3-0.

Hopp will now face Mervyn King from England in round two on Saturday.

For the German hopefuls, Alexandra Palace is about ending an average year with a success at the World Cup.

In addition to Hopp, two other Germans are participating in the most important tournament of the year, which is endowed with 2.5 million pounds.

In round one, Nico Kurz has to deal with the British veteran Andy Hamilton.

If he wins this duel on Saturday, the first German duel in World Cup history would be against Gabriel Clemens on Monday.
