Schwerin / Rostock (dpa / mv) - One day after the start of the free delivery of so-called FFP2 masks for people from corona risk groups, the stocks in the pharmacies of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are largely exhausted.

In many places, the operators made their customers aware of this in writing in shop windows or on displays.

On Tuesday, the federally funded campaign often led to queues in front of the pharmacies due to the high demand.

As a spokesman for the Mecklenburg Western Pomerania Pharmacists' Association said, the protective masks intended for free distribution could only be ordered at the end of last week.

In many cases, these were only now being dispatched.

"But I'm confident that the masks will be available again shortly," said the spokesman.

Delivery problems are not known.

To protect people at a particularly high risk of serious or fatal disease, the federal government had decided to issue masks.

The number of elderly and sick people affected is estimated at up to 27 million nationwide - that is around a third of the population.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that would be a good half a million people.

In the first step, people over 60 and people with certain chronic diseases can get three masks free of charge from the pharmacy.

In the second step, these people can receive another twelve masks from January 1st.

There is a personal contribution of 2 euros each for six masks.

According to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), the masks can also be sent in the New Year.

FFP2 masks are particularly effective at filtering particles from inhaled or exhaled air.

But neither do they offer 100 percent protection.

The campaign will cost the federal government around 2.5 billion euros.
