Berlin (AP) - Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has given out hot meals to the homeless in a food truck in Berlin.

On Wednesday he took part in a Caritas campaign at the Twelve Apostles Church in Schöneberg.

«Warming rooms or dining options are only available to a very limited extent.

And that's why I am very grateful to everyone, and above all to the many volunteers, that they show solidarity, that they care, as here today with the food distribution, ”said Steinmeier according to a press release from the Caritas Association for the Archdiocese of Berlin.

The singer Frank Zander was also there.

He accompanies the food truck and, according to Caritas, gives small gifts to the homeless.

The traditional Christmas party for the needy, which Zander otherwise holds annually, had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic.

The Caritas food truck offers free food on the street at various places.

In Berlin, around 200 warm meals a day are distributed from the vehicle at lunchtime, Monday to Friday, as the Caritas Association announced.
