The left-wing politician Gregor Gysi expresses doubts about the thesis that the Russian secret service was involved in the poison attack against the oppositionist Alexei Navalny.

Based on research by the “Spiegel”, the foreign policy spokesman for the Left Group said in the social networks “Twitter” and “Facebook”:

“Of course, it could have been as @derspiegel assumes.

But it could also have been different.

As a lawyer I have often seen that everything spoke against A, but then it was B. "

According to the research, eight agents of the Russian secret service FSB are said to have followed Navalny for years and were involved in the attack.

The magazine is based on joint research with the investigative platform Bellingcat, "The Insider" and the US news channel CNN.

Navalny himself then stated in a video interview that he had been followed for four years by a "killer squad" from the FSB that wanted to destroy him.

Navalny himself shared the reports on his Twitter account: "I know who wanted to kill me," he said and also published photos.

The rest is "speculation"

The news magazine research shows that Navalny was observed, but the rest is “speculation”, writes 72-year-old Gysi in a lengthy Facebook post.

He does not want to defend the secret service.

But in order to be able to put pressure on Russia to clarify the matter, the request for legal assistance must be granted.

Navalny collapsed on August 20 on a flight from Tomsk in Siberia to Moscow.

The three alleged perpetrators had followed Navalny from Moscow to Siberia and were also in contact with five other agents involved.

The evening before, Navalny ordered a Bloody Mary cocktail in a hotel bar, but he didn't get it because the bartender said the ingredients had run out.

As an alternative, Navalny said he was offered a Negroni cocktail, which he did not drink after just one sip, as it "tasted like the most disgusting thing I've drank in my entire life".

Perhaps it was this sip that made Navalny ingest the neurotoxin Novichok.

A good hour later, the cell phone of the agent Alexandrov, who had taken the same route as Navalny in the days before, dialed into the cellular network not far from the hotel.

Two days later, the 44-year-old, still in a coma, was brought to the Charité University Hospital in Berlin for treatment.

According to three European laboratories, the results of which have been confirmed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Navalny was poisoned with a chemical nerve agent from the Novichok group.

Moscow denies any involvement.

Navalny is still in Germany, where he is recovering from the attack.

Russia repeatedly rejected involvement in the case and emphasized that all state Novichok stocks had been destroyed, but the recipe had long been known in the West as well.

The case put a considerable strain on relations between Berlin and Moscow.
