As part of an exercise at a training ground in the Chelyabinsk region, military personnel of radio-technical troops and air defense units successfully repelled an attack by drones of a mock enemy.

The targets of the Russian military were about 20 small drones.

To defeat enemy drones, the Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile system (ZRPK) and the Tor-M1 air defense system were used.

The prompt receipt of radar information was ensured by the Polyana-D4 automated control system (ACS).

As Sergey Denisentsev, an expert at the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, explained in a conversation with RT, at the training ground in the Chelyabinsk Region, the military personnel of the Central Military District performed a very non-trivial task.

“The specificity of the exercises was that the military detected low-altitude targets at a sufficiently large distance and transmitted the coordinates to the command post.

The problem with such targets is that they are small and fly at low altitude.

Dotsu explained the increased attention to the development of methods for countering drones by the experience gained by Russia in the Syrian operation, where terrorists used drones against government forces and to attack the Khmeimim airbase.

According to the colonel, today even UAVs made from scrap materials (plywood, plastic, tin) and with simple motors and cameras installed on them can cause serious damage to the theater.

Industrialized countries are also actively improving drones of various classes.

Moreover, scientific research in the creation of new UAVs is ahead of the development of means of countering them, said Dotsu.

“Therefore, we in the association began to create consolidated units to combat UAVs.

For example, during classes and exercises of a motorized rifle company, one of the squads or platoons can not only be tasked with hitting ground targets, but also continuously monitor the air situation and immediately open fire on it when enemy unmanned aircraft are detected, ”Dotsu said.

In the ranks of the Southern Military District (YuVO), there are also consolidated formations for the destruction of unmanned aerial vehicles.

They include specialists from electronic warfare, military intelligence, snipers, and crews of self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and air defense.

The Ministry of Defense notes that such groups were "created to introduce modern combat experience."

In particular, in June, during an exercise in Chechnya, the Borisoglebsk-2 radar stations discovered drones of a simulated enemy, which from camouflaged firing positions destroyed snipers and anti-aircraft systems crews.

As noted in the press service of the Southern Military District, the training took place "as part of the development of a new methodology for combating unmanned aircraft."

"Experience of local conflicts"

From open information it follows that now in the Russian army, in addition to snipers, ordinary infantrymen and machine gunners are mastering the skills of countering UAVs.

At the training grounds, they learn to aim fire at mock-ups and balloons, which, like drones, can maneuver unpredictably in the air.

According to experts, the task of combating UAVs is so ambitious that it requires practicing its implementation with almost all ground-based means of fire destruction.

In particular, a number of the latest models of military equipment, some of which have already been adopted by the RF Armed Forces, are capable of shooting down drones.

One of these products is the "Terminator" tank support combat vehicle (BMPT).

It can provide counter-drones thanks to the new guided air blast ammunition, which is designed for two 30-mm cannons.

In addition, it is expected that the Terminator's capabilities in this field will increase with the introduction of the 57-mm gun in its arsenal.

Also the UAV's thunderstorm is the 2S38 Derivation-Air Defense Anti-Aircraft Artillery Complex (ZAK), which is already equipped with a powerful 57-mm cannon.

The maximum horizontal range of destruction of targets with this weapon is 14.5 km, the vertical range is 7.5 km, and the rate of fire is 80 rounds per minute.

According to Kornev, the Russian military and design teams are well aware that the samples of unmanned aircraft are constantly being improved - it becomes more difficult to detect and strike them.

In this regard, new types of ground military equipment are being created and modernized, including for the task of combating UAVs.

The experience of local conflicts dictates the following rule: any movement of troops in the theater of operations must be camouflaged and covered by various means from being hit by enemy drones, "Kornev emphasized.
