Grafenrheinfeld (dpa / lby) - The highly radioactive waste that accumulated during the operation of the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant is now all housed in an interim storage facility.

On Tuesday, the last Castor cask with fuel elements was placed in its designated place in the warehouse, announced the company responsible for interim storage (BGZ).

The warehouse is located directly on the site of the decommissioned Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant.

According to the BGZ, 54 castors are now stored there with the last container.

The interim storage facility for 88 castor casks is approved.

According to a BGZ spokesman, the lower utilization is due to the early phase-out of nuclear power.

The nuclear power plant in Grafenrheinfeld in Franconia was taken off the grid in 2015. The demolition there has been going on since 2018. Independently of this, the fuel elements must also be disposed of. "To do this, they initially stood in the power plant operator's cooling pool for around five years before they could be loaded into the Castor containers and brought to the interim storage facility," the spokesman said. They stayed there until final disposal.
