Tunisian Prime Minister Hisham El-Mechichi said that the normalization of his country's relations with Israel "is not an issue," days after Morocco decided to normalize its relations with Tel Aviv.

"This is a choice that Morocco has adopted freely. We respect the brotherly Morocco and the country we love so much. As for Tunisia, this issue is not on the table," Mechichi said in an interview with France 24.

"Every country has its own reality and truth, and every country has its own diplomacy, which it deems best for its people," he added, noting that the US administration did not raise this issue with him.

US President Donald Trump announced last Thursday that Morocco had pledged to normalize relations with Israel, and that Washington recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara.

After the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan, Morocco has become the fourth Arab country since last August to announce the normalization of its relations with Israel.

Morocco's decision sparked some criticism in the Maghreb, as Algeria warned against "foreign operations" aimed at destabilizing it.

The Western Sahara issue casts a negative shadow over relations between Algeria and Morocco for more than 40 years.
