Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament began the final consultation on the budget for 2021 on Tuesday.

The chairman of the budget committee, Thomas Wansch (SPD), informed the plenary that the majority of the committee recommended the adoption of the government draft with 161 amendments from the SPD, FDP and the Greens.

As expected, no majority in the committee found 129 amendments from the CDU parliamentary group and 235 from the AfD.

The CDU parliamentary group leader Christian Baldauf said at the beginning of the debate: "This budget represents an important turning point."

With a view to the state elections on March 14, 2021 and a new government in May, the CDU made its own priorities clear with its amendments to the budget.

In education policy, Baldauf called for more staff and money for daycare centers and schools.

Regarding economic policy, the opposition leader said that long before Corona, growth in Rhineland-Palatinate was below the national average.

Soon it called for an "honest analysis" and a new economic policy vision for Rhineland-Palatinate.

In the original government draft for the 2021 budget, the country's revenue is estimated at 18.6 billion euros.

This is 8.0 percent more than the second supplementary budget for 2020.

In terms of total expenditure, the 2021 budget provides around 19.9 billion euros - 4.1 percent less than this year.

Both items contain federal funds, such as funds for the university pact.
