Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The state of Hesse is giving more money for measures to improve the air in Hessian classrooms.

At the beginning of November, an immediate program for the implementation of air hygiene measures in the amount of ten million euros was launched.

In the meantime, the program has been increased to 75 million euros, as the Ministry of Culture of the German Press Agency said.

Daycare centers can now also receive money.

"The money is transferred to the school authorities by the Ministry of Finance, an application is not necessary," said a spokesman.

Therefore, it is currently not possible to say how many and which devices have already been purchased.

However, the recipients must later file a report on the expenditure.

It supports not only the purchase of air filter systems, but also minor maintenance work and major investments, "which improve protection against infection and help make teaching and caring for children in schools and day-care centers even safer, especially in the winter months," it said Wiesbaden.

It is currently cold in many classrooms.

With winter jackets, scarfs, hats and gloves, children sit with the windows open in class.

Many take a blanket to school and warm tea in the thermos.

Ventilation every 20 minutes is supposed to prevent corona transmission, but the teachers interpret this very differently.

For some, the window stays open all hour - even at temperatures around zero degrees.

Many parents would like to have air filters for the classrooms and would be willing to finance them themselves - but there are hurdles.

The ministry makes it clear that the decision as to whether and which devices are used rests solely with the school authorities.

"The reason for this is to be seen in the fact that questions of correct installation, safety, follow-up costs, maintenance, etc. can only be clarified in cooperation with the school authority."
