To curb the spread of the coronavirus, Lithuania will deploy nearly 250 roadblocks on Wednesday intended to ban travel during the end-of-year holidays, police said on Tuesday.

Travel is prohibited in Lithuania from Wednesday December 16 until January 3 to dissuade people from visiting relatives and friends during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Only people going to work, to a home. doctor or funeral are allowed to travel.

A controlled first wave

"Our target will be this weekend, Christmas and New Year," police chief Renatas Pozela told reporters.

While Lithuania managed to control the first wave of the pandemic in the spring better than other EU countries, it failed to curb the second wave which brought a very large number of infections.

In a new round of restrictions, the government ordered the closure of most stores and barber shops from Wednesday, and asked citizens to stay at home.

Bars and restaurants have been closed for over a month and only offer take-out.

A country of 2.8 million inhabitants, Lithuania has nearly 97,000 COVID-19 infections, including 863 deaths, since February.
