• 'Twitter killer' Trials Takahiro Shiraishi, accused of tearing up nine people in Japan

A 30-year-old Japanese man, nicknamed the

Twitter killer

, was sentenced to death by a Tokyo court on Tuesday for the murder of nine people he met online, a judicial official said.

Takahiro Shiraishi

was "sentenced to death," the source told AFP, without giving further details.

At trial, Shiraishi admitted that he had murdered and dismembered eight women and one man, between the ages of 15 and 26.

At the trial, held last October, Takahiro Shiraishi, accused of storing the dismembered bodies of his victims in refrigerators, did not refute the nine murder charges he faced, stating that they are "all correct."

On Halloween morning in 2017, police discovered in Takahiro Shiraishi's house nine bodies dismembered into at least 240 pieces, hidden in refrigerators and toolboxes, dusted with cat litter to try to hide them.

The man is suspected of having lured victims between 15 and 26 with suicidal tendencies through Twitter telling them that he could help them in their projects or even die at their side.

Police arrested Takahiro Shiraishi three years ago while investigating the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman who allegedly tweeted that she wanted to commit suicide.

After the disappearance of the young woman, her brother would have managed to connect to her Twitter account and detected a username with suspicious messages.

The defendant's lawyers asked that the charges be reduced to "murder with consent", which carried only a sentence of between six months and seven years in prison, claiming that the victims consented to be killed, but the Tokyo court has declared this. guilty of murder and has been sentenced to death, which in Japan is executed by hanging.
