Duisburg (dpa) - The steel group Thyssenkrupp is preparing to close its heavy plate plant in Duisburg with around 800 employees.

A company spokesman confirmed a corresponding report in the "Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" on Monday.

"In the last few months, despite an intensive search, no buyer could be found who would continue the business area," the newspaper quoted from a letter from the Thyssenkrupp steel board to employees.

After Saarstahl AG refused to take over the heavy plate business unit, they will begin to shut down the plant by the end of September 2021 at the latest.

Thyssenkrupp took the decision to shut it down in the spring if a sale was not possible.

According to Thyssenkrupp, nobody should be made redundant.

“Of the approximately 800 employees, a good 90 percent will get replacement jobs in the north of Duisburg or at other locations,” it said in a statement.

Further employees would be able to leave the company through partial retirement arrangements.

In the plant in the south of Duisburg, which was founded in 1963, sheet steel is manufactured for the construction industry, shipbuilding and pipelines, among other things.

According to the company, it has been in the red for years.
