Berlin (dpa) - In the next ten years, a further 800,000 residents of railway lines are to be relieved of rail noise.

To this end, noise barriers are to be built and homeowners are to receive money for soundproof windows.

As announced by the federal government and Deutsche Bahn, 125 kilometers of railroad tracks are to be noise-rehabilitated by 2030.

"The residents along the railway lines have a right to be protected from the noise of the rail in the best possible way," said Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU).

Many residents will have to wait years for noise protection.

By 2050, all of the 6500 km of route affected are to be renovated, a fifth of the network.

"We will plan and build quickly," assured rail infrastructure manager Ronald Pofalla.

Around 2000 kilometers have been renovated since 1999.

64,000 apartments received soundproof windows.

In addition, tens of thousands of freight cars were given noise-reducing brakes.

It was said that the rail noise was halved as planned.

Since yesterday, particularly loud freight wagons are no longer allowed to run on the German rail network.

According to their own statements, the German freight wagon keepers have retrofitted all wagons on the reporting date.

Instead of using cast steel soles, they now brake with a composite that roughen the wheels less and thus generates less noise.

However, many foreign freight railways that regularly travel through Germany have not converted their wagons.

Contrary to what was planned, they do not face a fine for violations.

The Ministry of Transport suspended it for a year.

Scheuer justified this with the fact that there were bottlenecks in the conversion due to the corona epidemic.

At the same time he assured strict controls.
