  • UK Boris Johnson lifts lockdown in England in time for Christmas

The British Government has decided to put

the entire London metropolitan area

and its more than eight million inhabitants

on a

"high alert" situation for the coronavirus

.

The decision, announced this afternoon, leaves 60% of the British population at the maximum level of alert, with severe restrictions such as the closing of pubs, bars and restaurants.

"More than 10.5 million Britons in London, Kent and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire will be put at level 3," announced Health Secretary

Matt Hancock

, who justified the measure after the

spike in infections in the last two weeks

, since the last confinement was lifted.

The measure has caused the stupor of the service sector, which had barely recovered activity.

Hotels and cinemas will also have to close, although

the measure does not affect "non-essential" stores at the moment

.

For meetings, the

"rule of six"

applies again

, although this provision may be suspended between December 23 and 27 to

allow Christmas celebrations in homes

, with a maximum of three family members under the same roof.

Gyms and sports centers will remain temporarily open.

Hancock warned that "a new variant of the virus" may be behind the

increase in cases in south-east England

, which is approaching infection levels in the north.

The Secretary of Health clarified that it is "highly unlikely" that the

Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine

that has begun to be administered this week to some 50,000 British people will not work against the new mutation of the virus.

The United Kingdom is the

second European country with the highest number of deaths

from Covid (64,170), surpassed again this week by Italy.

The number of daily cases was set on Monday at 18,447, although the

trend is again upwards after the ground gained during the

November

lockdown

.

It is not ruled out that the 'premier' Boris Johnson will intervene in the coming days to ask restraint from the population, after the scenes of massive purchases in Regents and Oxford Street in recent days.
