Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - The leader of a gang of false police officers is said to come from Nuremberg.

The 29-year-old is suspected of being the head of the group, which accounted for numerous cases of fraud in Central Franconia, said the police headquarters in Nuremberg on Monday.

The perpetrators are said to have posed as police officers on the phone in order to coax large sums of money from their victims.

In Central Franconia alone, the damage is around 700,000 euros.

According to the police, the man was arrested on December 3 with more than 30 other suspects in Turkey, where he had fled in 2017.

Assets of more than 105 million euros were also secured in this major campaign.

According to the police, the German and Turkish authorities had investigated a call center organization for the formation of a criminal organization.

Alleged accomplices in Germany have meanwhile been caught and legally sentenced to sometimes long prison sentences.

The trick of the fraudsters: They called their victims, posed as police officers and said that a gang of burglars had been caught in the neighborhood.

Notes with other addresses were found.

For fear of being haunted by thieves themselves, the people called then handed over sometimes large sums of money, assuming that their savings were safely kept with the police.

In many cases, the people only realized days later that they had apparently been caught up in a scam, the police reported.

"In addition to the high financial damage, the victims often suffer emotional damage as well."
