The reason why the European Commission has put forward a proposal for a taxonomy, a list of criteria for sustainable investment, is mainly that we as consumers should know that sustainability means the same thing throughout the EU.

Hydropower does not achieve all environmental goals

Hydropower is certainly good from a climate point of view, but since hydropower often results in drained river stretches, destroyed ecosystems and reduced ecological diversity, it will not be sustainable.

According to the European Commission's proposal, other environmental goals, such as biodiversity, must also be achieved in order to be classified as sustainable.

- They are absolutely right on the ball that biodiversity is important.

We also think so, says Andreas Gyllenhammar, sustainability manager at Jämtkraft to SVT Jämtland.

- But when you do this in list form and put a green or non-green stamp, we think it is a far too undeveloped way of working.
