Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The first gun ban zones in Saxony-Anhalt are to be set up around the train stations in Halle and Magdeburg.

The Halle police station will set up a “weapon and knife ban zone” this year, the Interior Ministry in Magdeburg said on Monday.

Another zone is expected to be set up in Magdeburg at the beginning of next year.

This means that nobody is allowed to have weapons or knives with a solid blade more than four centimeters long in the area around the height of the runway.

The regulation works against "violent conflicts involving the use of weapons," said Interior Minister Michael Richter (CDU). In his opinion, the prohibited zones are “a clear signal to strengthen internal security”. According to ordinances by the state government and the Ministry of the Interior, police authorities have the option to set up such zones if they assess the situation accordingly. There may be exceptions for professional reasons, for example. Violations can cost up to 10,000 euros.
