EDF could strengthen its position in nuclear energy in the United Kingdom.

The British government has announced that it will discuss with the French giant to build a new nuclear power station in Suffolk on the east coast of England.

The plant, with a capacity of 3.2 GW, will be able to supply electricity to six million homes.

It will be equipped with two powerful third-generation EPR reactors and could create up to 25,000 jobs for its construction and operation.

The cost of the project is estimated at around 22 billion euros.

However, it remains to be seen whether this amount will be respected, because two other reactors under construction by EDF at

, in the south-west of England, have experienced significant delays and additional costs.

For the public authorities, these new reactors are essential because the majority of the British nuclear fleet is aging and must close within 10 years.

In addition, London relies on nuclear energy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This energy provides around 20% of the country's electricity and the government wants to maintain this percentage in order to meet its climate targets.
