Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The day care centers in Rhineland-Palatinate will remain open on Wednesday even after the lockdown has started, but should only be used for care in urgent cases.

"In day-care centers and schools, there should be few contacts and therefore the children should be looked after at home, if possible," said Education Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) on Monday after consultations with local authorities, parents' representatives and trade unionists.

"At the same time, the day-care center must remain open for children whose parents cannot ensure care at home."

Therefore, the daycare centers should not be closed completely until January 10th, as in spring.

Until then, the "regular operation in case of urgent need" applies.

You know that the situation for families and single parents has been a huge challenge for nine months, said Hubig.

That is why: “Anyone who cannot look after their children at home can send them to daycare.

Proof of the need is not required.

However, looking after the children at home is "a strong sign of mutual solidarity, also for our educational specialists".

Christian Baldauf, chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, had previously criticized the fact that after the resolutions following the federal-state consultations on Sunday, it was initially unclear how daycare was planned in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate daycare specialist association, Claudia Theobald, said that there was a lot of unrest among educators on Monday.

"We are not in favor of closing daycare centers, but for a concept."
