WELT AM SONNTAG:

The ten-day-old Corona resolutions are already out of date, new regulations are pending.

Can the citizen be expected to keep track of things here?

Stefan Aust:

It is becoming more and more difficult because, along with credibility, the attention of the citizen also suffers.

Anyone who has the feeling that everything will be different in five days will be less involved.

This is how we last experienced it, when the politicians used the “breakwater” in marketing speech, but the way to get there remained unclear to most and the result was not satisfactory either.

WELT AM SONNTAG:

Even in January, February and March, despite the start of the vaccination, no major change in the situation is to be expected.

So will this interplay continue?

Aust:

That can be assumed.

But it is a mistake to believe that political means lead to the goal here.

What would have a much stronger effect would be pragmatic approaches, as has now been carried out by the mayor of Tübingen, Boris Palmer (Greens).

It allows the particularly vulnerable group to be protected in a much more targeted manner, i.e. the older women and men in the dormitories or in the care facilities.

Separate shopping times, vouchers for taxis, effective masks at state expense and continuous testing of the staff - these are understandable approaches.

If the infection situation then drops there, it will have an impact on the whole debate.

WELT AM SONNTAG:

The Chancellor gave a very emotional speech in the Bundestag last week.

Did that make an impression on you?

Aust:

Honestly not a big one.

For months we have been experiencing a kind of authoritarian state that lurches from measure to measure as just described and now sees that the benefits were not sufficiently great.

Whether you react emotionally to this is of secondary importance.

In any case, I would prefer a pragmatic policy.
