Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said that the US recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara region was not in return for restoring relations between Morocco and Israel.

Bourita added, during an interview with Radio France Internationale, that the American recognition is an important breakthrough, and it will also serve the Palestinian cause, as he put it.

He stressed that the Moroccan foreign policy never fell within the scope of bargaining, and that it had never submitted to the logic of the deal, stressing that what happened was the reactivation of the mechanisms of relations with Israel, which for years had been a tool in the service of peace and rapprochement.

Last Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced that Morocco and Israel agreed to establish full diplomatic relations between them, and that his country recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara.

The Western Sahara conflict is one of the oldest conflicts in the African continent and the world, and dates back to 1975, as Rabat insists that the region is part of its territory, and accepts to grant it autonomy within Moroccan sovereignty, while the Polisario Front - supported by Algeria - insists on holding a referendum to decide the region's fate In which its residents have a choice between seceding or joining the Kingdom of Morocco.
