Berlin (dpa) - The SPD wants to campaign for an increase in the minimum wage in Germany to twelve euros.

Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said that on Saturday in Berlin.

"We want to be the very first in Germany to introduce a statutory minimum wage of at least twelve euros to ensure that everyone gets the respect they actually deserve for their work," said the SPD chancellor candidate on Saturday at a party event in preparation for the 2021 federal election campaign .

Scholz has been calling for a minimum wage of twelve euros for years.

Now the finance minister renewed the demand shortly before the expected evaluation of the minimum wage law.

The minimum wage law stipulates: "This law is to be evaluated in 2020."

It is expected that Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) will present this assessment of the lower wage limit by experts in the coming days.

Heil had already announced that, on the basis of this assessment, he wanted to propose how a significant increase in the minimum wage could be achieved.

Heil had already spoken out in favor of twelve euros and described this as “an achievable milestone” around the end of October.

"Five years after it was introduced, the minimum wage is still 46 percent of the average income," he said.

At 12 euros, the gap to average wages, which in Germany would be 19.76 euros, would be significantly narrowed.

On January 1, the minimum wage rises to 9.50 euros.

On July 1, 2021, it will be increased to EUR 9.60 gross per hour, on January 1, 2022 to 9.82 and on July 1, 2022 to EUR 10.45.

The minimum wage commission recommended these levels decided by the federal cabinet.

Representatives of employers and trade unions are primarily represented there.

The adjustments proposed by the Commission primarily follow the development of collective bargaining agreements, i.e. the development of incomes through previous collective bargaining agreements.

Trade unions have long been calling for a legal step to raise the lower wage limit to a higher level, so that the minimum wage commission can then recommend further adjustments at this level in accordance with the rules that are already in force.

The lower wage limit is currently 9.35 euros gross.
